Contracts are written to be missed.
A gym, mobile, or internet contract is legally allowed to auto-renew for another full term if you don't cancel by a specific date, sometimes three months before the contract ends, in a clause you'd need to actually read the fine print to find. If you can't fully read the contract, or you just didn't know to look, you find out when the next payment goes through.
